  • Ross Castle

    Address:
Ross Castle, Ross Road, Ross Island, Killarney, Co. Kerry, V93 V304, Ireland .

Just 4km from Foley's Townhouse & Restaurant, Ross Castle perches in an inlet of Lough Leane. It is likely that the Irish chieftain O’Donoghue Mór built it in the fifteenth century. Ross Castle was the last place in Munster to hold out against Cromwell. Its defenders, then led by Lord Muskerry, took confidence from a prophecy holding that the castle could only be taken by a ship. Knowing of the prophecy, the Cromwellian commander, General Ludlow, launched a large boat on the lake. When the defenders saw it, this hastened the surrender – and the prophecy was fulfilled.

  • Torc Waterfall

    Address:
Torc Waterfall, Torc, Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland .

Situated 8km from Foley's Townhouse & Restaurant, Torc Waterfall is a 5-minute walk off the N71 Killarney Kenmare road through scenic woodland. The waterfall is some 70 to 80 feet high and the Owengarriff River which feeds it rises in “The Devil’s Punchbowl” on nearby Mangerton mountain.

If you want a good viewing point of the lakes you can climb the 100 or so steps immediately to the left of the waterfall to get some excellent views of the lakes. Torc Waterfall is one of Killarney’s most well-known tourist attractions and a traditional stopping point for bus and coach tours. As a result, it can get busy and congested around this area in the peak summer months.
